Eco-design: functionality and recycled plastic to make your life easier

We live in an age where practicality and sustainability seem to be at odds with each other, but in reality, this is not the case. At Sp-Berner, we want to provide solutions that are easy to use and also committed to the environment. That is why we focus our products on eco-design. A philosophy that places environmental impact on the same level as aesthetics and functionality. In this way, we ensure that every piece of recycled plastic is useful, attractive and responsible, so that our customers can enjoy ‘Good Plastic’ in our products.

Eco-design: thinking circular

Eco-design is much more than just using recycled materials. It is a creative strategy and technique that takes into account the entire life cycle of a product, from its conception to its final disposal.

Some key questions designers ask themselves during the creative process are:

  • How can we use less material?
  • How can we use existing materials?
  • How can we ensure that the product can be easily recycled at the end of its useful life?

These questions lead them to different answers, such as reducing weight and volume to use less material. Using recycled material and selecting homogeneous materials that are easy to separate into components to ensure that the product can be easily recycled in the future.

In the case of plastic, a highly versatile, resistant and lightweight material, eco-design becomes the distinguishing factor. What is more, it is estimated that up to 80% of a product’s environmental impact is determined during its design phase, which highlights the importance of eco-design during its manufacture.

Functionality and aesthetics. The dual success of design

We know that sustainability, functionality, ergonomics and aesthetics must go hand in hand. That’s why our products are designed to make your life easier.

  • Functionality. Our in-house design teams, with extensive experience in plastic injection moulding, work meticulously to optimise each part to ensure maximum performance and durability.
  • Aesthetics. The beauty of a product also contributes to its useful life. That is why we collaborate with external designers of the calibre of Andreu Carulla, Toni Clariana, Inma Bermúdez (National Design Award winner in 2022), Clara Portillo, David Carrasco and Héctor Serrano, winner of the National Design Award in 2024. They manage to create unique products.

Our commitment to post-consumer recycled plastic

The circular economy is a driving force behind our production. That is why we use post-consumer recycled plastic, giving it a new lease of life. We also process this material at our own 72,000 m² recycling plant. This guarantees quality control and traceability of the material, transforming what was once waste into a high-quality material that can be used to manufacture new products.

By applying eco-design, we ensure that once the product has fulfilled its purpose, its design will make it easy to recycle again, maintaining the active life cycle of the material and promoting ‘Good Plastic’.
